My First Day at College

   MY FIRST DAY AT COLLEGE

Basic Points:
I . Memories and College ( Para 1 ,2 )
II.  Admission and Entrance ( Para 3 ,4 )
III. Fooling ( Para 5 ,6 )
IV. Assembly and lectures ( Para 7.8 )
V. A view of College and ending ( Para 9 , 10 )

Sweet memories are like the sweet smelling flowers bestrewn on the strenuous path of life. They change life into a bloomy and balmy garden.  In the storehouse of my college memories, enriched with many pearls and pebbles, “The First Day at College” occupies a pronounced (prominent) position. The memories of my first day at college are still shining in my mind’s eye like smiling tears. This was infact, a red-letter day of my life (a day of special significance) because this was the day when I enjoyed the real taste of full and free life, for the first time in my lifetime.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” –Dr. Seuss

Right from my school life, the thought of the wonderful life of college had been occupying my imagination. I had heard about the spectacular routine of college life from seniors, who extolled (praised) the numerous opportunities and told about the liberty and dignity they enjoyed during their college tenure. So, I was really excited to join college as a regular student.

“College is a reward for surviving high school.”
-Judd Apatow

After, the result of Matriculation examination was declared; I got myself admitted into the college of which I am a proud pupil. The regular classes were to start a few days after I took admission and I kept longing for the approach of that day, the day on which I was to stand, face to face, with a new life which, as I find now, is laden with thorns and flowers in an equal measure.

“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up.”
–Muhammad Ali

The fancied day came at last. I still remember that day of spring when dressed in a clean white uniform, I, with a few friends of mine, proceeded to college with high hopes and vigorous enthusiasm of learning. When we were furlong off the premises of our college, we, by some means were informed that a group of seniors was waiting at entrance for the new-comers to make “First Year Fools.”

“Seniors always reach juniors with an air of superiority.”
–Anonymous

Stunned with astonishment and horror, we stuck to the ground as the magnetic power of the earth had paralyzed us. All of the sudden, a student of fourth year, who was the president of the College Union, appeared there with a sudden surge of grace. He encouraged us to face the situation and escorted us to the main gate.

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.”
    - Thoreau

As soon as he left us, our ill-fate took us to the gang of the mischievous boys who were looking forward for this opportunity .They told me to do 25 sit-ups ( sit down and stand up) while holding my ears with hands. This was humiliating but being helpless before such a group of ruffians, I had to do it. I could’ve complained about them but I didn’t.

Be the flower that gives its fragrance to even the hand that crushes it.”
 – Ali ibn Abi Talib (R.A)

After getting rid of them, we moved towards the crush hall. All the students of first year were asked to assemble in the assembly-hall where, after recitation of a few verses of the Holy Quran and the National Anthem, the Principal delivered a moral lecture and advised students not to take part in party politics and other activities but to pay full attention to our studies to achieve our goals. After this, the peon guided us about the time-table and escorted us to the Room No. B – 04

“College is a refuse from hasty judgment.”
–Robert Frost

Our first lecture was of English. The professor came a few minutes later. He looked as if he were a light-hearted (cheerful) person. We stood in his honor. He told us to sit down and took roll call. My Roll Number was 23. After this, he introduced himself and advised us not to misuse the liberty of college life but to make the full use of opportunities to develop our personalities. In this way, all the professors talked about education and discipline. They talked to us in a friendly manner quite differently from school teachers.

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.”
 - Henry Brooks Adams

After the lectures were over, we decided to visit the college. The common room was very discordant (noisy). Then we went to the college canteen which was too very crowded and noisy. Next, we visited the college library. It appeared to me as an ocean of books, the countless waves of which could only be wondered at and never fully admired.
The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” – Albert Einstein

Finally, we started going back to our homes. On my way back, I fell into a reverie (daydream) and began to recapitulate (summarize) the lessons and experiences of the day. On the very first day, I found the college life burdened with the responsibilities which is the price to be paid for its liberty. And through these years of study in it, I have found that the sea of responsibilities is much deeper than that of liberty. The college life was a double edged sword but the fun associated with it still lingers with all its beauty and pleasure in the utmost gallery of my memory lane.
