V. Other
fields, banes and conclusion (Para 9,10 11)
Science
is an intellectual and practical activity, encompassing the systematic study of
nature. It is based on unbiased observation and continuous experimentation. It
is a persistent pursuit of knowledge and a way to channelize our curiosities.
It reveals sheer truth and bare realities of the universal and natural systems.
It has proved to be a true benefactor of mankind. It not only has changed our
lives but has also modified our way of thinking.
“The
whole of science is nothing more than the refinement of everyday thinking.” -
Albert Einstein
Ever since man
has begun to observe, think and reason, he has been wondering about the world
around him. It is his innate quality to explore the new horizons of nature to
satiate his unquenched thirst for knowledge. Therefore, he has made several
attempts to explore nature and utilize his efforts for the betterment of the mankind. This journey from ignorance to knowledge has
become possible due to science.
“Science is the topography of ignorance.
“
-Oliver Wendell
Holmes
Today, the world has been revolutionized by the
blessings of science. We are better able to explain the happenings which used
to be considered strange and mysterious. We have deciphered the mystery of the
atom. By the knowledge of science, the
simplest school boy is now familiar with the truths for which Archimedes would
have sacrificed his life. Moreover, it has proved itself as a rational
basis of metaphysics of religion.
“The
more I study science, the more I believe in God.”
-Albert Einstein
Nowadays,
most of our daily work owe to science and technology. We have also made
unmatched progress in the fields like medicine, transport, communication,
technology, industry, commerce, agriculture, construction and education. Above
all, it has helped us to overcome superstitious beliefs and betterment of our
attitude on individual as well as collective
“Science
is beautiful gift to humanity. We should not distort it.”
-A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
The
ailments which once used to be incurable are being treated by Integrated
Disease Management (IDM). The discovery of causative agents of several diseases
has helped us to prevent them.Modern vaccination techniques have been developed by the scientists to prevent
viral and bacterial diseases like poliomyelitis, scarlet fever, whooping cough,
tuberculosis and diphtheria. Smallpox has been eradicated from the world. Better diagnostic methods like X-Ray method,
ultrasound, E.C.G, E.E.G etc. have been developed. Many maladies can be cured by
using antibiotics and other synthetic drugs. The life expectancy of human
beings has been
“Medicine
is the science of uncertainty and an art of probability.”
-
Sir William Osler
Science has thoroughly revolutionized the means of transportation and
communication. Man who had to travel long distances on foot, in past, can now
cover the distance of thousands of miles in few hours. Today, bullock carts, horses, horse drawn carriages, gigs etc.
have been replaced by luxury cars and motorbikes. Global Positioning System is
being used for navigation. Buses and airplanes are being used for travelling. Above
all, travelling is no more an adversity as it has become reliable, easy and a
source of pleasure due to
“The science of today is
the technology of tomorrow.”
-Edward Teller
Technology has provided
us with new means of communication, information and entertainment. The world
has become a global village. Today, unlike past, we have smart phones,
computers, smart watches and many more. Above all, around 40% of
the world population has an internet connection. Internet is
full of bundles of information which can be accessed by any smart phone.
Television in its modified form, smart TV, is being used all over the world.
Now man can enjoy any sort of extravaganza (entertainment) without any
restriction of place or time.
“Art is I; Science is we.”
-Claude
Bernard
Science has also changed the world of commerce. Online Banking
and shopping is very common these days. The industrial progress due to use of
machines and robotics is apparent. It includes chemical, textile and food
industries. Better methods for the preservation and production of food have
been developed. Today, Man has discovered the composition of Earth crust. On
the other hand, he has gathered much information about the expanding
“Science is organized
knowledge.”
-Herbert Spencer
Today, science has
improved the way of building houses. Concrete and metal is being used to build
bridges, buildings and roads. Agricultural life has also been changed.
Moreover, acquisition of education has become easier. Better printing and
online study have proved very useful for students. Media owes its existence due
to science.
“Time is short; science
is infinite.”
-Thomas Hardy
Despite of all its
boons, it has some banes also. Waste products of many industries and auto
mobiles cause several types of pollution. Mass destructive weapons have been
made which may prove a threat to the survival of man on the planet. It is also
one of the causes of materialism and liberalism. But I believe
“There is nothing either
good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
-William Shakespeare
-William Shakespeare
In a bird’s eye view, science is a great blessing
which has proved to be useful in all the fields of life. This age of science
and technology is different from the age of ignorance and unknowingness. Science has enlightened us spiritually as it
has broadened our views and outlook. Therefore,
we can conclude that science is a double edged sword or a mixed blessing. It
will respond in a way we deal with it.
