A city is a vast built up area where a
large number of people live and work. Life in a city embodies all the bright
and the dark shades of a civilized life. A village, on the other hand, is small
town situated in a country area. Village life is calmer, quiet, pure and
peaceful than city life but it also has some demerits. Neither city life is
perfect nor is village life flawless. There is no single opinion about which is
one better because the merits of city life are missing in country life but the
advantages that the latter offers are not found in the former.
“To every disadvantage there is a corresponding
advantage.” -William Clement
Stone
Life in a city introduces us to the
up-to-date trends and tendencies of the age. Its highways and by-ways, its
places of entertainment, its facilities, its buildings and banks, its colleges
and universities help its people to enjoy liberty of thought, speech and
action. While most villagers live like squirrels locked up in the cages of
feudal lords. However, village life is closer to the great customs and golden
traditions of our forefathers. The people there feel pride to observe their
customs. They love all and hate none.
“I had rather be first in a village than
second at Rome.” -Julius Caesar
Cities are the center of trade and other
activities. People are provides with modern amenities. Adequate facilities are
available for education and health. There are many educational and technical
institutions. The city dweller are usually more advanced and enlightened than
the people living in villages. They are more prosperous as they are more
educated and trained. They also enjoy better medical facilities. There are
large hospitals and specialists are easily available for the treatment of
complicated diseases. The country-men move towards these cities for treatment
of their diseases and education.
“I love capitals; everything is the best at
capitals.”
-Lord Chesterfield
The sources of entertainment, communication and
transportation are easy accessible in a city Newspaper and magazines are within
the reach of everyone. Television, internet and smart phones are big sources of
information and entertainment. These are
rarely found in villages. Moreover, in cities, one lives among the educated
people where points of common interest are discussed and the exchange of views
becomes another sources of information. Cars, buses, wagons and many other
forms of vehicular traffic are available for transportation in lesser
“This City is what it is
because our citizens are what they are.”
–Plato
A city offers many kinds of recreation and
amusement parks and playgrounds which attracts people of all ages. People work
all day long, and need entertainment for relaxation. They can enjoy food of all
types. Cultural, musical and drama shows organized by different organizations
are a source of great enjoyment for the people and visitors. Moreover, the city
life provides man with a lot of chances of progress. From specialist to a
layman (common person), all can find something of their interest in city life.
“God made the country and man made the town.” - William Cowper

However, the city life is not all comfort and blessing. Cities are full of din and clamour, haste and hurry, crowd and congestion. There is no peace of mind, no leisure and no contentment in cities. There is neck-break and cut-throat competition everywhere. Most of the city dwellers are like hollow, stuffed men. In contrast to this, the villagers are large hearted people. They are simple, innocent, kind and hospitable. The respect and help each other. This is the reason we say that a urban life is a far cry from a rural life.
“Clearly then, the city is not a concrete jungle, it
is a human zoo.” - Desmond Morris
The pleasure of a country life lies really
in the eternally renewed evidences of the determination to live. There is an abundance of natural scenery,
refreshing greenery and pure light atmosphere. One can enjoy one’s fill to
marvelous and matchless beauty of sunrise and sunset. Flourishing fields,
flower meadows, gurgling brooks and chirping birds are there to feed our eyes
and ears upon. The food is fresh and pure. Vast, open, clean atmosphere and smokeless air
does an immense good to our lungs. In contrary, air is polluted, houses are
ill-ventilated and food is not pure in cities.
“Anybody
can be good in the country.” -Oscar Wilde
The population of a village consists of
farmers and a group of artisans like carpenter, blacksmiths, shoemakers etc.
The main occupation of majority is to grow food and other necessary crops. They
live a very difficult and tough life. They have to do their work whether it is
raining or is unbearable heat of the burning sun. There is no special fun for
villagers however the marriage ceremony and the village fair are among the most
amusing events of the village. On these occasions they show their feelings of joy
and pleasure.
“When I am
in the country, I wish to vegetate like the country.” -
William Hazlitt
Most
of the villagers are rough and uneducated. They are given to countless
prejudices and superstitions. But they are free from the corruptions of city
life. They are honest, sincere and
sympathetic. We find more sincerity, more humanity and more fraternity in
villages than in cities. The village life is life of struggle and poverty but
it has not dampened the spirits of our countrymen. The gusto and sincerity with
which they celebrate religious and seasonal festivals show their zest of life.
“A village
is such a piece of glass where nothing unobserved passes.”
-Charles H. Supurgeon
In a
nutshell, both city and village life have pros and cons. Although the village life has
hardships and lacking of many modern facilities of life, it has its own
peculiar charm. It is natural and pure. The city life is somehow artificial but
has a lot of its advantages over country life.
The villagers grow crops and provide food for the country. Crops make a
large part of our country’s economy. City dwellers do technical work and the
stability of country owes to them as well. Therefore, both these patterns of life
are necessary for the survival and development of human race on the global
scale.
